Abstract Cash crop cultivation especially of cotton entails an application of partial persistent insecticides with the consequence of residue formation in soil and crops and possible pollution of water resources. Contamination of soils and water is important for its key function as habitat medium for a lot of non-target organisms. In addition, possible contamination of crops that are used for the daily nutrition of the farmers is under investigation. Therefore, soil and water samples are collected from permanent study sites of BIOTA West Africa (biodiversity observatories) in Burkina Faso and Benin supplemented by samples of soil, water and crops from cotton growing areas in the catchment area of selected biodiversity observatories.
