Abstract Based on a combined micro-economic and micro-level approach, the decision making and farm management reactions of small cotton producers on cotton-related national policies in Northern Benin and Burkina-Faso are analyzed. The valuable contribution of mathematical modelling approaches (programming, bio-economic modelling) to understand the impacts of policy and technological change on rural income generation and natural environment will be shown. Links to the assessment of biocide residues in adjacent areas as a result of intensified cotton production and the impact of cotton field encroachment as well as biotope fragmentation will be identified.
